Online Counseling

Let’s meet in the comfort of your own home…or car…or office…or…

We’re all familiar with online counseling by now,

but here are just a few tidbits to consider:

Online counseling has been shown consistently to be as effective as in person counseling for most people (sometimes more so for various reasons). There are, however, some situations where it may not be advised.

Some of the benefits include:

Skipping the stress of fighting traffic and weather,
saving time,
saving money in gas and maybe a sitter if you can make a deal with your kids,
more privacy (no bumping into people in the waiting room),
being in the comfort of your own space, and with your own furry therapy helper if you have one.

And yes, we can do EMDR online!

What You Need For Your Online Appointment

  • Good internet connection (if you can stream Netflix you have what you need, best to choose 5G wifi if you have it). The wifi connection at Starbucks is usually a bad idea.

  • A private space (in your home, office, car, etc- a running fan in the hall can be helpful if family members are home)

  • Computer, laptop, tablet, or cell phone (it is best if you have your screen propped up somewhere rather than holding it and set up so I can see you from the shoulders up - tips below)

What is Helpful For Your Online Appointment

  • Put your devices on do not disturb

  • Quit any extra apps/programs that could steal your bandwidth. And an updated browser is a good idea.

  • Restart your computer/phone/tablet before session

  • Have decent lighting – with your screen propped up to eye level (you can use potted plants, bananas, pillows, blankets, selfie sticks, car mounts, boxes or books for height - get creative.)

  • Bring something to take notes on (there is almost always something you want to remember)

  • Tissues are often helpful

  • A hot cup of tea, coffee, chocolate, your cat on your lap, your dog at your feet – whatever helps you relax
